Stroud’s Best Kept Secret is Being Revealed
Tucked away off Merrywalks, just a stone’s throw from the town centre, The Hill is one of Stroud’s most beautiful buildings, yet most local people have never even seen it. This ornate Cotswold manor house has been hidden within its own secluded gardens, for almost 400 years, but now Mike and Sue are determined to put it back on the map.
“The fact that we are now ‘the Hill’s’ of ‘The Hill’ made it feel like it was ‘meant to be’ “says Mike “We know it’s going to take time but little by little we’re breathing life back into the old house.”
‘Occasions At The Hill’ already caters for a range of family events from birthday parties to funeral wakes whilst local businesses are making the most of the location and onsite catering, for great-value private lunches as well as meeting and seminars.
“The house is also becoming increasingly popular for weddings,” continues Mike, “as it’s one of the most central venues in Stroud. The external architecture of the building is stunning and because it’s set in such idyllic gardens it provides the perfect backdrop for photographs without having to spend a fortune on a country house hotel”
Catering at The Hill is however, what you would expect in a five star country house hotel. Mike and Sue met in 197x when they both worked as catering lecturers at Gloscat and food has been a driving force in their relationship ever since. The couple have catered for special events for over thirty years, offering everything from formal dinners to hog-roasts, finger buffets to afternoon tea with the highest quality of food and service no matter what the size or occasion.
Throughout their careers Mike and Sue also branched out and pursued individual projects. Mike was the inspiration behind the college’s fine dining, ‘Renaissance’ restaurant when it opened at the Cheltenham site on Princess Elizabeth Way whilst Sue’s passion for puddings has made her one of the counties most well regarded sugar-craft experts. Not only does she create exquisite, handmade cakes for all occasions but she continues to run courses throughout Gloucestershire too.
“We have a real passion for food” continues Mike “there is nothing more satisfying than creating a meal that captures the spirit of an event. Food is a huge part of any occasion and we use the freshest ingredients to design a very personal menu that will be remembered – for all the right reasons.”
The Hill is a unique venue; it may not be graced with a wealth of lavish furnishings or acres of land, but it more than makes up for it in character. The building has been loved for centuries and walking around the landscaped gardens, up the old stone stairways to the house, it’s easy to be lost in the romance of a bygone era, perhaps that’s why Mike and Sue stepped up to the challenge, even though it was the last thing on their minds.
